We as a staff team here at the YWAM (Youth With A Mission) Nelson base are so excited for how God is going to move during this time of growing, learning and falling more in love with Jesus as we pursue the call of God on our lives together.

Our heart is to see our students come alive as God grips their hearts for the nations, missions, evangelism, freedom, intercession and a lifestyle of worship, as they experience new cultures, skills, knowledge, training, equipping, and a solid, personal relationship with God.

It is our absolute honour and privilege to journey alongside our students and it is our prayer that your heart comes alive with the desire to follow Christ wherever it may take you!

Are you ready for the trip of a lifetime?

There will be two phases during the DTS (Discipleship Training School). The first phase will be classroom style teaching based in Nelson, New Zealand and the second phase, the world will be your classroom!

You will begin with a 3-month life-changing lecture phase in beautiful Nelson, NZ. Nelson is one of the best spots in New Zealand, with the mountains in our backyard and the ocean in walking distance. We have multiple outdoor activities at our fingertips, or you can relax in one of the many cafes or markets in the city.

Phase One- The Lecture Phase

The twelve week Lecture Phase will include:

  • Prayer time
  • Teachings
  • Small Groups
  • One-on-One Mentoring
  • Personal Study Time
  • Team bonding
  • Worship and Intercession

During the first twelve weeks, a number of speakers will teach on topics ranging from:

  • Intimacy with God
  • Hearing the voice of God
  • Spiritual warfare
  • Relationships
  • Missions
  • Worship and Prayer
  • Gifts/ Calling/ Destiny
  • Renewing the mind
  • The Character and Nature of God
  • The Lordship of Jesus
  • Evangelism and many more!

Then you will head into a 3-month outreach phase, visiting up to 5 different countries in a specific region of the world. This is the ultimate opportunity to see God impact multiple nations and also a time to see if your heart is captured somewhere along the way in a calling to overseas missions. We long for our students to discover more of the call that God has placed uniquely on each of their lives as they experience many new things for the first time and step into more of what God has for them.

Phase 2- The Outreach phase

The twelve week Outreach Phase will include:

  • Cultural Orientation
  • Relationship based evangelism
  • Working with Christian ministries, organizations, churches, children’s ministries… and so much more!
  • Travel
  • Teaching
  • Living alongside locals

During this time we look forward to you truly knowing God, and living out of that place in every area of our life. We aim for you to discover more of His extravagant love no matter what one’s story, situation or background is, and the extent God will go to, to reach the “one”. We hope you grow in compassion as you learn first hand of God’s great love reaching to the ends of the earth. No matter where you go, God can be glorified and is moving, and we want to partner with what He is doing while discovering what makes your heart come alive!

We desire to answer, discover, know and unpack the call of God on our lives, according to what scriptures say:

“Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I. Send me!” Isaiah 6:8

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matt. 28:19-20

May you take the opportunity to activate this in your own life and have your OWN testimonies to share of how that became real to you.

May you be a part of the great commission that God has given us in His Word, to see the gospel spread and reach all the Earth. And may you represent the hands and feet of Jesus helping every person to know they are deeply loved and God has a plan for their life.

Following Jesus is the greatest adventure of a lifetime! To know that with Him any miracle could be just around the corner, and with Him we are always in awe of who He is and what He will do next in and through us.

There are no limits to how He can move! And what a joy it is that He invites us on this epic journey as we give Him our wholehearted “YES”.

Some ideas of what to expect to grapple with during your DTS:
-To open your eyes to the wider body of Christ and what the church is doing and experiencing all around the world and get to be a part of that. To understand that there are other believers worshiping the same God on the other side of the world in their own mother tongue and we are all part of the bigger body of Christ.
-To grow in servant-hearted leadership and stepping out of your norm.
-To gain in a new perspective and heart for missions and the lost as you partner with a range of different ministries and dabble in new areas.
-To build relationships with the locals, your team, staff and God as you navigate new environments, countries, different ways of living, etc as you learn the value of working together and learning from each other.
-To dream with God as to what your future may hold after being first hand on the mission field and realizing the level of impact that you can have.
-To have God personally go before you and meet you no matter where you are in the world and grow more into His likeness as He leads you.
-To develop different skills and communication in ministry and as you interact with others who have had different life experiences than you.
-To learn how to share the gospel and use your own testimony as a message of hope to those who need it.
-To take God at His word and believe and pray for God to do more than you could ever ask or think.
-To build your faith and partner with God’s promises even if it seems to not make sense at the time.
-To discover more about yourself and who God made you to be. To walk that out and build a lifestyle that embodies a heart of worship.
-To know more of the Word, (the Bible) “which is lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path” (Psalm 119:105) and as you meditate on the scriptures letting His truth transform you.
-To know where to turn when things get hard and reset your focus on the things above.
-To go after the things on God’s heart and fulfill the great commission while building a desire for that also.
-To travel with a greater purpose, mission and intentionality living for something far greater than just ourselves.
-To know that God is a fun God who delights in partnering with His children as we enjoy creating new treasured memories.
-To inspire and cultivate growth in your relationship with God, building Christ-like character.
-To actively participate and step out in faith as you partner with the Holy Spirit believing for miracles, freedom and healings.
-To refine your ability to relate to, learn from and work with people, including those of different cultures, personalities and perspectives.
-To equip you to serve God’s purpose to reach the lost, unreached, to care for the poor, and to influence and impact society for God’s glory.
